1862
Prosperous year, 317 vessls engaged in fishing.

This book was very interesting to a history buff. It is extremely thorough with many detailed maps as well as cross-referenced information. Good job in citing sources. The index enables the reader to do a quick search for information. Production quality is also very good. I was very impressed by the effort that went into creating this title and the research that it must have entailed. Overall great work.

The Gloucester Time-Line introduces a detailed history of one of America's oldest communities. Hundreds of years of struggle, growth and refinement are depicted in countless facts. No better outline for such a history could be compiled; no better starting point for understanding Gloucester could be developed. Containing more detail than any previous history of Gloucester, this work will serve as the definitive guide to researchers far into the future.

At last, our ancient (by New World standards),diverse and dauntless port of Gloucester has a brilliantly researched, referenced and bibliographed index to itself from 1000 to 1999. At last the scholar, the buff and browser have fingertip access to a mother lode of historical reference whose encompassing detail is perhaps unprecedented in the field of local archival restoration and preservation.

- Joseph E. Garland, Historian

The Gloucester Time-Line is not a mere chronology, but a meticulously documented historical outline of more than four centures of human experience in a very special place. It will be an essential resource for historians, biographers, genealogists, communitiy leaders, and any researchers interested in the historic seaport of Gloucester, Essex County and the North Shore.

On behalf of our approximately 4,300 students and 370 teachers I convey a great big "thank you" for compiling the Gloucester Historical Time-Line. The Time-Line invities and encourages connections between the history of our community and our curriculum at all levels. The format invites teachers to enter Gloucester's past with ease and accuracy for any lesson, and should ignite students' interest in learning more about important figures in Gloucester's history. Thank you for enriching our curriculum and instruction.
